Kitchen Fun: Cooking Skills for Kids Ages 6-8

Let me just start off with cooking with kids ages 6-8 is a great way to not only bond but engage and educate your kids.

At this age, (I love this age) kids are curious, eager to learn, and are starting to develop the fine motor skills needed for more complex tasks. (Although my Visual Recipes can start at age 3, this age is super fun for creating and crafting recipes.)

Cooking not only helps them build these skills but also introduces them to basic math concepts, improves their reading through following recipes, enhances their understanding of nutrition, and helps them with their communication skills.

I have always loved cooking, and I've found that the kitchen is the perfect place to bond with kids. The shared experience of creating a meal or desserts together fosters communication, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment. Plus, it’s a lot of fun!!!

Whether we’re making a simple snack or a more elaborate dish, these are some of my favorite memories. In this guide, I'll share tips to help you develop your child's cooking skills and make the most of your time together in the kitchen.

Cooking Skills

1. Reading and Following Recipes:

Teach them how to read and follow simple recipes with step-by-step instructions. Starting with recipes that have fewer steps and familiar ingredients is key at this age—it helps build confidence and ensures success in the kitchen. Visual recipes are particularly great for kids because they provide clear, visual cues that make following directions easy and enjoyable.

My Visual Recipes, designed with diverse and inclusive characters, not only simplify cooking processes but also support communication and language skills. They empower kids to explore different ingredients and flavors while learning the basics of cooking in a fun and engaging way. To learn more about Visual Recipe cards check out my blog post here!

2. Measuring Ingredients:

Introduce them to more precise measurements like teaspoons and ounces. Let them measure ingredients like flour, sugar, and liquids using measuring cups and spoons.

This hands-on approach not only teaches them about different units of measurement but also enhances their understanding of quantity and proportion in recipes. They learn to recognize fractions and decimals as they follow recipes, which strengthens their math skills in a practical context.

Understanding measurements helps them grasp concepts like doubling or halving recipes, reinforcing multiplication and division concepts naturally. It’s a fundamental skill that builds their math proficiency while they create delicious treats together in the kitchen, turning cooking into a fun and educational experience.

3. Cracking Eggs Independently:

Encourage them to crack eggs independently into a bowl, with supervision. This activity not only builds their confidence but also enhances their fine motor skills as they carefully handle the eggs.

Teaching them how to remove any shell fragments if they accidentally get into the bowl reinforces attention to detail and problem-solving skills. It’s a hands-on lesson in both kitchen safety and the importance of precision in cooking.

This experience empowers kids to take on more responsibilities in the kitchen while developing essential life skills that they can carry forward into adulthood.

4. Mixing and Whisking:

Show them how to mix ingredients together using a whisk or spoon. Let them practice mixing batter for pancakes, muffins, or cakes until smooth. This hands-on activity not only teaches them the basics of combining ingredients but also improves their coordination and arm strength. As they whisk, they learn about the importance of thorough mixing to achieve a consistent texture and blend flavors evenly.

It’s a step-by-step process that encourages patience and attention to detail, reinforcing their understanding of recipe sequences and kitchen procedures.

5. Cutting with Safety:

Introduce them to basic knife skills using child-safe knives, emphasizing safety at every step. Start by showing them how to hold the knife properly and guide them through a rocking motion to chop soft fruits, vegetables, or herbs. This practical introduction not only develops their motor skills and coordination but also instills a sense of responsibility in handling kitchen tools.

Supervise closely to ensure they understand the importance of staying focused and using gentle, controlled movements. Teaching knife skills early on equips kids with essential kitchen knowledge and confidence, setting a foundation for them to explore more advanced culinary techniques as they grow. It’s a foundational skill that promotes independence and creativity in cooking, empowering them to contribute meaningfully to meal preparation while learning respect for kitchen safety practices.

6. Using Kitchen Appliances:

Demonstrate how to use basic kitchen appliances like a blender or food processor (under supervision of course) for tasks like blending smoothies or making dips. This will introduce your kiddos to kitchen technology and teaches them the importance of following instructions and safety guidelines when using appliances.

It also encourages them to explore different textures and flavors, as they learn how ingredients transform through blending. Supervise closely to ensure they understand how to operate the appliances safely and clean up afterward.

This early exposure to kitchen tools fosters confidence in handling technology responsibly.

7. Sauteing and Stirring:

Teach them how to sauté vegetables in a pan with a little oil over medium heat. Show them how to stir ingredients gently to prevent sticking or burning. This will introduce them to basic stovetop skills and also teach them about heat control and the importance of cooking.

It's a step-by-step process that encourages patience and attention to detail, as they learn to adjust the heat and stir ingredients to achieve deliciously cooked vegetables. Supervise closely to ensure they handle the stove safely and understand kitchen safety practices.

8. Rolling and Cutting Dough:

Expand their cooking skills by teaching them how to roll out dough for cookies, biscuits, or pie crusts. Guide them in using a rolling pin to flatten the dough evenly, demonstrating techniques for maintaining thickness. Let them explore their creativity by using cookie cutters or a knife to cut out shapes or pieces.

It's a rewarding process as they see their dough transform into beautifully shaped treats ready for baking. Rolling and cutting dough instills a sense of accomplishment and pride in creating homemade goodies!

9. Baking and Oven Safety:

Introduce them to the fundamentals of baking and the importance of oven safety. Start by explaining how to preheat the oven to the correct temperature for different recipes. Teach them to use oven mitts to handle hot pans and trays, emphasizing the need to protect their hands from heat. Show them how to set a timer to keep track of baking times, and explain why monitoring the oven is crucial to prevent overbaking or burning.

Discuss the importance of placing pans on the correct oven rack for even baking and how to check for doneness using visual and tactile cues.

10. Assembly and Presentation:

Guide them in assembling dishes, teaching them the art of cooking assembly and presentation. Begin by showing them how to layer ingredients for balanced flavors and textures.

Encourage them to think about colors and shapes as they arrange the ingredients, fostering their creativity. Teach them techniques like drizzling sauces artistically or using garnishes like fresh herbs or sliced fruits to enhance the visual appeal of the dish. Discuss the importance of neatness and symmetry in presentation, making the meal not only delicious but also visually attractive.

Using visual recipes can be particularly helpful in this process. These recipes provide step-by-step pictorial instructions that guide kids through the assembly and presentation of each dish. They offer clear examples of how to arrange ingredients and present the final product, making it easier for kids to follow along and replicate the techniques.

Visual recipes help children understand the importance of aesthetics in cooking and provide a structured yet creative framework for them to practice and perfect their assembly skills.
